A recent survey conducted by the American Psychological Association in 2010 has confirmed how much of a part long term stress and inadequate stress management plays when it comes to our overall physical health and relationships.

Part of the problem is that we are living such a fast paced life …

… so that many people turn to unhealthy ‘quick fixes’ to manage their stress – popping pills, eating chocolate, drinking alcohol – and do not devote enough time to thinking out and establishing long lasting lifestyle and behavioural changes.

There also seems to be a correspondence between stress and the lack of willpower to carry out the required adjustments. Maybe it feels like overwhelm at this point.

Coping With Stress in Relationships

Many parents do not seem to recognise how much of an impact their own stress can have on their own children. These kids are indeed not learning any healthy coping strategies to deal with either these stressful circumstances or their own stresses. So it would seem that we are headed for disaster if we don’t get a handle on how to stop stress and find ways to relax and be at peace pretty soon.

Effects of Stress

Stress has many serious negative emotional and physical health consequnces. If we can learn to address this and find ways to drop all negativity and feel good, our health and relationships are much more likely to improve as a consequence. Our children will also become much happier and will learn healthy ways to cope with whatever life brings

Almost three quarters of the US population, according to the APA, on a yearly basis report that they are having stress levels higher than what they would regard as healthy. Long term or chronic stress is one of the main contributors to diabetes, heart disease, depression, problems of the digestive tract and cancer and is directly related to the increased risk of early death due to stress related illness. Yet, despite knowing all of this people still often have problems making the changes they need to their lives, to de-stress and ensure better health and greater longevity. We need to take the problem of stress seriously – it is almost an epidemic and already starting to reach crisis levels.

Peace Love Happiness

Our greatest contribution to ourselves and to others is our inner peace. We can find stress reduction and peace by meditating and starting to become more deeply aware of our inner selves. We need to reframe our experiences – take a minus and add a small vertical stroke. This changes it to a positive angle that works and feels better, even though the outside circumstances may not have changed. This has a positive effect on our life, our relationships and eventually our health and well-being.

Many people seem to believe that struggle, rather than ease is the route to success. We need to really challenge such assumptions and embrace a way of living that is ‘in the flow’, in tune with ourselves and acts as positive role modeling for our children.

Gut Feelings

We can turn ‘victimizing’ exepriences into opportunities to grow. When we are faced with decisions that have to be made, instead of stressing about them we could try tuning more into our inner wisdom or intuition, our ‘gut’ feelings, rather than allowing them to constantly go over and over in our heads. Whether your ‘gut’ tightens or feels like it is contracting, or whether you suddenly feel elated or excited, this is a pointer to which direction your success and happiness lies.

Let Go and Trust

Struggle blocks prosperity in all areas of life. Relaxation and trust opens the doors to happiness and abundance. In order to relax we need to trust. When you finally trust yourself, you then know how to live. When we are stressed we are stuck in ‘control’ mode, trying to keep everything from getting ‘out of control’ and trust disappears. Only when we are in alignment with trust can we live truly abundant life. Besides developing awareness, intuition and trust, the practice of gratitude is also an amazing antidote to stress.

Stress and relaxation are just two sides of the same coin, or like a see-saw they go up and down from time to time yet both are part of life. So when you feel that you are out of balance just try making an adjustment by doing some of the opposite.

Here is an article that you could find interesting:

Stress is a bit sneaky. At first you feel good. You have a busy life and you like it. You are happy in your job and with your relationship, your home and your children. But while you continue to work hard you feel that it is not as much fun as it used to be. So now you will have to watch out. At first, a bit of stress helped you to do your work the best way. But as soon you’re not enjoying it anymore, the negative stress slips into your life.

Why is negative stress slipping into your life, while at first everything was fine? You don’t really do much more work than before. You were always busy, but now it seems to be more difficult. The reason? You forgot to allow enough relaxation into your life and especially into your mind. Maybe you took enough time off. But your mind was still busy. It is important to give your mind some free time. If your mind is not relaxing anymore, stress will accumulate and it will become impossible to resolve your stress automatically. You will notice that you are not happy anymore.

What can you do to solve your accumulated stress?

Check out these suggested techniques. You’ll find a list of them by clicking here

Recognize that it is all in your mind. You should know that negative stress and a feeling of happiness don’t cooperate. There are many ways to solve your stress. One of them is: become happy again and your stresses will disappear like snow in the sunshine.

How to solve stress through becoming happy again? I guess that you are working hard. You have probably forgotten what you liked to do when you were young. Did you like to do sports or did you like to listen to music? Maybe you liked painting or maybe you were lying on the beach for hours on end. You just should find out what it is that used to make you happy.

Reserve some space and time in your life for those hobbies and feel happy again.

You can immediately transform boredom into happiness and peace of mind! 5. Walk to a window, look outside, and take a single deep breath. I got this technique from the Zen master Mary Jaksch. Just walk to a window, look outside, …
