Managing Stress With Family

A home has long been considered a single family, consisting of two parents and their children. The downward turn of the current economy, unemployment, and trying to maintain a lifestyle on a reduced salary has created a dilemma. It is now common to see several generations of family members living together. Also, most nuclear families today have both parents working, and finding time for outside activities for their children can become difficult. Coping with stress related issues such as money, providing the best one can for their children, and possibly having to help elderly parents can make managing stress difficult.

The best way of managing and dealing with stress within the family unit is by spending time together as a family. This doesn’t have to be as large and complicated as a family vacation. Even setting aside one night a week for a shared dinner is enough to bring each individual together in the group and ideally reduce the amount of family stress that may be present. It is when there is little positive interaction between family members that differences of opinion and other issues can create problems.

Having time set aside for fun interaction is a good way for families to manage stress, but not all families can make their schedules so flexible to accommodate a lot of relaxation time together. Other stress reliever to use in the home is to share typical chores together. When it can be seen that everyone is working together to get something done, there is likely to be more harmony under the roof. Dinner is an easy example, with one person responsible for cooking the main meal, another making a salad, a third setting the table, and the last two filling the dishwasher and washing pots and pans by hand.

However, if the communication isn’t open and members don’t feel that they are being heard or listened to, then stress can occur. The entire family may feel depressed if one member isn’t being open and honest about their feelings. Another technique to address stress issues is by having regular family meetings; a time when all can share their main concerns without being interrupted and without fear of being judged.

Managing stress at home is extremely important, as so much of what happens with the family will affect our lives elsewhere. The emotional causes of stress at home can result in low grades at school, poor performance at work, and a lack of interest in extra-curricular activities. While many people take their family for granted, and make many assumptions about their role in the family unit, to have a successful family relationship it is important to put some effort in keeping everyone working together.

    Yes, I guess the whole family should manage stress together. Let’s not make a stress out of ourselves to the member of the family. We need to help, not burden.
